A Special Mother’s Day at The Arbors

This year, we’re going to showcase the unique bonds we have here at The Arbors and The Ivy Assisted Living Communities between mothers and their children.

A Mother-Son Dynamic Duo

We have been lucky to witness a very special Mother and Son relationship grow and develop over the past 20 years between Karen Walters-Zucco who is our Executive Director and Sales and Marketing Director at The Arbors at Amherst and her son Ed Walters-Zucco who is our Regional Resident Care Director.

Karen and Ed’s connection is truly remarkable, characterized by a blend of sweetness and depth. What elevates their relationship to something truly exceptional is their ability to maintain a clear boundary between their professional and personal lives. Their journey began in 2004 when Karen assumed the role of Ed’s direct supervisor. Reflecting on this dynamic, Karen acknowledges the challenges inherent in overseeing her own son, given her exacting standards. Yet, Ed’s perspective sheds light on the profound influence their bond has had on him. He speaks of resilience instilled by his mother and emphasizes the invaluable lessons—both in professional prowess and personal growth—that he’s gleaned from her, all underscored by a profound mutual respect.

Working Mothers Set A Powerful Example

At The Arbors and The Ivy Assisted Living Communities we see how our own daughters look up to us. We as working Mothers have an opportunity to set a powerful example for our daughters. Some key important factors we would like our daughters to take away are from our dedication to our communities are:

  • Work Ethic and Determination: Children who see their mothers putting in effort, facing challenges, and achieving goals in the workplace instills a strong work ethic, perseverance, and the belief that they can accomplish anything they set their minds to.
  • Confidence and Independence: Seeing their mothers navigate the professional world fosters confidence at a young age. They learn to be self-reliant, take initiative, and advocate for themselves.
  • Breaking Gender Stereotypes: Working mothers challenge traditional gender roles. Daughters see that success and fulfillment are not limited to one gender, paving the way for them to pursue their own ambitions without limitations.
  • Importance of Passion and Purpose: Many working mothers are passionate about their careers. Seeing this passion teaches children the importance of finding something they enjoy doing and pursuing it with dedication.

It’s hard to deny that the moms in our lives do so much and because of that they deserve recognition and appreciation for always being there. At times, it may be difficult to express how grateful one can be. To let the important women in your life know just how much she means to you during the month of May, we’ve pulled together a list of ideas to help!

  • Flower Arranging – naturally you’re probably thinking about gifting a beautiful bouquet of flowers. Instead of buying them, grab various packages of blooms, green fillers and then spend the afternoon arranging them together. Not only are you making memories, but you’ll each have a pretty homemade keepsake.
  • Get Tickets to a Live Show or Concert – whether your mom loves Broadway or Stevie Nicks, there are plenty of options out there. Put up tickets to see her favorite band, a local concert or any live show.
  • Take a Class Together – Does your mom like to bake, paint, or hike? Whatever her preferred activity, consider signing up for a class together and get her out of her routine.
  • Visit Friends or Relatives – Is there a close friend or relative she hasn’t seen in a while? Try and coordinate a surprise visit for a long overdue catch-up.
  • Make a Craft Together – You are never too old for some arts and crafts, let your creative juices flow. Pick up a kit at the craft store or come up with one of your own like painting a flower pot.
  • Try a New Hobby Together – Whether it’s knitting, rock climbing, or starting a book club together. Whatever the endeavor may be, it’s better to experience it together.
  • Spa Day – Treat your mom to a relaxing and quality day of pampering. Sign her up or the both of you for a spa treatment whether it’s a facial or a massage.
  • Take a Long Walk Together – Whether it’s a stroll or a hike it’s great to get outside and enjoy a day exploring the outdoors. A walk is always a great opportunity for a wonderful conversation.
