If you become a family caregiver, you probably have a good idea of some of the typical tasks that care recipients rely on: ordering and picking up medications at the drugstore, discussing the care plan and needs with the doctors and care managers, helping with activities of daily living such as dressing and bathing. But there are also some unexpected challenges that come with caring for a loved one. For example, did you know that some caregivers leave the workforce entirely in order to provide full-time care for a loved one and then struggle to get another job when their time as a caregiver comes to an end? Or that in 2016, family caregivers typically spent about 20 percent of their income, or an average of $6,954, as a result of caregiving? At the same time that caregivers find their role rewarding, they also find them stressful. Here’s a look at five challenges that might catch you off guard.
Realistic Expectations
Providing care to a loved one is a noble undertaking, but it is not an easy task, and many family caregivers aren’t exactly sure what to expect. It’s important to set realistic expectations for yourself before you make the commitment and that you’re able to still make time for your own family, career, and overall health and well-being. If you think it might be too much of a time or financial commitment, you may want to consider assisted living, which not only creates an environment that supports those who need assistance but oftentimes is an environment where one can thrive. Many caregivers report positive experiences from caregiving, such as giving back to someone who has cared for them, knowing that their loved one is getting excellent care, and developing increased meaning and purpose in their life.
