Does your aging loved one resist the idea of assisted living? Still wondering if assisted living might be the right fit for a parent or spouse? There are dozens of reasons to choose assisted living, from safety and socialization to transportation and peace of mind. Assisted living communities offer clear benefits that can help improve your loved one’s health, wellness, and emotional well-being thanks to daily opportunities for dining, activity, and socialization. Here are a few of the reasons why The Ivy at Ellington residents love their assisted living community nestled in the heart of Ellington, Connecticut.
1. It Feels Like Home
Marie Munger and her husband, Bob, spent 64 years together going on adventures, moving from Rhode Island to Texas for work — he a financial manager, she a med tech — and raising their daughter, Michelle. When Bob passed in June 2018, Marie moved from Texas to the Ivy at Ellington to be closer to her daughter and son-in-law, Ken, who live nearby.
“I felt right at home right away,” Marie says. “I love my room. It’s a little apartment all my own.”
2. It’s Easy to Make Friends
Marie hardly spends any time in her room, though. In the month since she’s moved to The Ivy at Ellington, she’s become close with the other residents and staff members.
“The companionship is wonderful,” she says. “I made friends, and we do a lot of things together. Compared to some facilities I’ve been in, it’s more companionable. We have more to do with each other. At other places, there were cliques. Here, it’s been very friendly. It’s really a lovely place.”
3. It Accommodates Couples
Ruth and Henry met as graduate students in the German department at Cornell University in 1964. Today the still healthy and spunky 78-year-old and 80-year-old, respectively, are very active in their new home at The Ivy at Ellington.
“The Ivy at Ellington had no waiting list. The location was ideal. It’s less than two miles from our son and daughter-in-law and their four children. It’s close to the church we attend. It’s close to the YMCA where we exercise,” says Ruth as she rattles off the list of reasons why she and Henry chose The Ivy at Ellington.
4. It Offers Peace of Mind
Henry and Ruth don’t need daily assistance today — though Henry does appreciate not needing to mow the lawn and Ruth enjoys having the sheets changed and washed — but they will someday. When the time comes that they need more care, all they have to do is ask The Ivy at Ellington team members. “All we’d have to do is say we want more assistance,” Ruth says, “and they’ll do that.”
5. It Is in a Great Location
Ruth is biased — she was born just one mile from the Ivy at Ellington, on West Road, and lived in that house for the first 56 years of her life — but she is very happy to be back in her hometown.
“I love the area [The Ivy at Ellington] is in,” she says. “It’s very handy. It’s close to everything. My church is one mile around the corner. My sister is two miles around the corner.”
She likes being able to easily drive to visit friends in the area, help out at church, and see her sister every day.
“I appreciate the ease it is living here,” Ruth says. “Everybody is very helpful and very friendly, and they try very hard to make you comfortable. Anything that you ask for, you pretty much get. It’s been a good change.”
